Max completed his early education at Christian Brothers High School located in Sacramento. Max, in his high school days, was quite phenomenal in sports. While in high school, he won a junior title in the Sacramento Open golf tournament two times.

Max’s career as an actor took off when he played the role of Jethro Bodine, the dim-witted cousin of Jed Clampett in the popular show ‘The Beverly HillBillies.’ He was part of the T.V. show for nine long years when the show continued to be broadcast on T.V. However; he also continued to appear on other T.V. shows such as Vacation Playhouse, Love, and American Style during his work at The Beverly HillBillies.

When Max Baer Jr. was offered to appear in the 1981 T.V. show Return of The Beverly HillBillies, he rejected the offer. But he still made guest appearances on television. This was when Max switched to the off-screen role, where he was involved in writing, directing, and producing roles. 

The successful dramas he wrote, directed, and produced are Macon County Line (1974) and The Wild McCullochs (1975). Moreover, he is credited as the first to use the title of a popular song as the title and plot anchor of a film. 

Before he retired, Max directed Hometown U.S.A., a comedy film, in 1979. However, he used to appear as an occasional guest on the television shows.
